Gateway to University Honors
In Gateway to University Honors, every first-year honors student, regardless of major, is equipped with the tools to become a global citizen scholar. This lofty goal is made attainable with the help of a dedicated instructor who educates students about the numerous resources that the University Honors Program has to offer. Additionally, students learn more about themselves and the skills that they bring to the table by identifying their individual strengths. The Gateway to University Honors class challenges honors students to engage in self-reflection so that they can gain the greatest possible meaning from their academics, extra-curricular activities, and lives. All of these factors help prepare students to be leaders in their school and communities, while also providing a community of other motivated individuals with whom to share meaningful discussion and make lasting friendships.
Personally, the greatest lesson I have learned from Gateway to University Honors has been to look beyond the tangible outcomes of my endeavors. One of the primary activities that helped me attain this mindset was taking an activity that impacted me, and asking “What?”, “So What?”, and “Now What?” This analysis made me realize that some things that previously seemed important to me weren’t as significant, while seemingly trivial events and actions actually had a surprisingly meaningful impact. Additionally, it has been truly inspiring and also humbling to hear the intelligent and profound ideas of my classmates. From in-class discussions to simple conversations before and after class, I am continually amazed by the diversity of thought in each of my classmates, as well as the uniqueness of personality and interests.
Having gained a better understanding of what the University Honors Program is about, I look forward to my first Honors Experience. I intend to set aside time to reflect on my academics and my life to ensure that I am truly happy in the path I have chosen, and that I am not just “going through the motions.” Also, when I am trying to improve in a particular area, whether I want to get a better grade in a class or if I want to learn a new language, I will be sure to engage in deliberate practice, so that I maximize my performance and continue to challenge myself. In conclusion, I am excited to get more involved with the University Honors Program and to become a leader within my school and community.
